John Thomas Wade 1861 - 1945 GGrandfather and Eleanor Tate 1867 - 1934 GGrandmother John Thomas Wade was born  on 28th January 1861  to Robert Wade and his wife Ann (nee Walker) at The Winning, Castle Eden, County Durham and baptised on 26th May 1861 at Castle Eden. He died on 12th December 1945 at the Thomas Taylor Home in Morpeth. His wife, Eleanor Tate was born on 8 April 1867 at Nova Scotia, Harraton, County Durham. Her mother was Elizabeth Tate but no father is named on the birth certificate. I had quite a problem identifying her because on the 1871 Census there were two Eleanor Tates living in the same house, both born within a few months of each other in 1867. This probably explains why she was always known as Ellen, to distinguish her from her Aunt. I then had a stroke of luck when I received a contact, through Genes Re-united, from Laraine Georgeson in New Zealand. I did not know what had become of the second Eleanor Tate, but Laraine told me that she had in fact emigrated to New Zealand and that she knew her birthdate. This meant it was possible to determine which one was my Great Grandmother. She also sent information on her Ellen Tate which is shown below This Ellen Tate, married Matthew Hodgson, had 13 children, the last one was Vera Stephenson Hodgson, who was given at birth to her sister Grace and Husband Robert Stephenson. They left for New Zealand in 1911 when Vera was just 3 months old. Vera is my friends grandmother and was bought up as her sisters child. The Stephensons never had any other children. The rest of the Hodgsons came to NZ like browns cows over the next 20 years, with Ellen and Matthew coming in 1929. Ellen died over here in 1938. There is also a question mark over the true identity of John Thomas Wade. On his birth certificate, his name is given as John Thomas Wade, whereas on the 1911 Census he signed his name as John Thomas William Wade. John Thomas (William?) And Eleanor married on 6 December 1890 at St Johns Church, Monk Hesleden, County Durham. They had eight children :- Isabella Clement Wade was born in 1886 at Chester Moor, County Durham. She died at a young age in June 1891. Ann Wade as born in 1892 at Castle Eden, County Durham. I cannot find any further information on her. Eleanor Wade was born on 18 December 1894 at Trimdon, County Durham. She married James W Henderson in 1914 and had two children, John, born 1914 at Amble and Mildred (Millie), born 20 May 1916, also at Amble. When I was a young lad, I used to bike down to Amble and go sea fishing with Willy Henry, Millies husband. Any fish I caught were taken to Harry Nybergs fish and chip shop in Shilbottle in exchange for a fish and chip supper. Our first holiday abroad was on our tenth wedding anniversary, when we went to Majorca with my mother and Millie. I don’t think I’ll ever forget Millies rendition of ‘Harbour Lights’. Eleanors husband James died in the first war on 1st October 1915 at Flanders, France. She re-married in 1918 to Lundy Hind. She died in a nursing home in Kingsbury, Warwickshire in 1994. I took my mother across to Kingsbury to visit her once when she was here on holiday. Elizabeth Wade was born in 1897 at Amble. They had followed John Thomas’ brother Robert to live in Amble for work in the local coal mines. Elizabeth married James G Gillon in 1920 and they had four children. William was born in 1921, John in 1922, Maisie in 1926 and Margaret in 1930. Robert Wade was born in 1899 at Amble. He died in infancy in 1900 at Amble. Catherine Wade, my Grandmother was born on 28th March 1900 at Amble. Mary Wade was born in 1902 at Amble. She married James McKenna in 1921 and had two children. Doreen was born in 1923 and Muriel in 1924. Gertrude Wade was born in 1905 at Chevington Drift but died in 1907. No-one  in the family knew of her existence until the 1911 Census was published.
