Catherine Knox (nee Wade) 1900-1979 Maternal GrandMotherCatherine Wade was born at Gordon Street, Amble, Northumberland, on 28th March 1900 to John Thomas Wade and his wife Eleanor (Nee Tate). She was one of eight children. She married Joseph Knox at St Pauls Church, Alnwick, on the 25th February 1922. On leaving school she went into service, or 'place' as she used to call it. My earliest memories are staying at her house most weekends after my father died. I used to help with the washing in the old dolly tub and mangle, 100 turns clockwise, 100 turns anti-clockwise and on and on. She and husband Joe moved from Colliers Close to Widdrington Cottages and I used to love calling in to see them on a saturday afternoon. They loved watching the wrestling on TV and would really get into it shouting ‘you dirty bugger’ especially to Steve Logan. Another reason I liked calling was to have a jam sandwich. They always used best butter and jam, really tasty! She was a prolific smoker and would normally have a yellow nicotine strip running through her white hair. She died of congestive heart failure in Alnwick infirmary on 19th August 1979.
