John Wilkinson Family Tree
John Wilkinson 1866-1951 GreatGrandfather
Having
no
information
on
John
Wilkinson
(B1866),
I
am
indebted
to
the
notes
received
from
cousin
Dora
Jarratt
and
her
father
Jack
Pickering.
Great
Grandfather
John
Wilkinson
was
born
on
20
July
1866
at
Wingates,
near
Morpeth,
in
Northumberland,
son
of
William
Wilkinson
and
Mary
Hindhaugh.
He
was
the
eldest
of
seven
children.
He
worked
in
small
landsale
pits
and
would
scour
the
countryside
looking
for
outcrops
of
coal.
They
drove
a
drift
into
any
they
found
and
used
natural
drainage
to
get
rid
of
any
water.
He
married
Elizabeth
Thornton
in
1890
and
they
had
ten
children,
all
born
at
Choppington.
William
was
the
eldest,
born
in
1891,
then
came
James
Thornton,
born
1894,
Esther
Hindhaugh,
born
1895,
John,
my
grandfather
born
in
1897,
Annie
Thornton,
born
in
1899,
Mary,
born
in
1901,
Dorothy,
born
1903,
Frances,
born
1905,
Thomas,
born
1907
and
finally
Elizabeth,
born
1913.
After
getting
married,
he
lived
most
of
his
life
in
the
Bedlington
area
before
moving
to
Newbiggin
by the sea where he died in 1951 aged 85. All of his sons were miners and all his daughters married miners
Siblings
Esther
Wilkinson
,
born
1867
at
Longhorsley..
She
married
William
Stevens,
a
postman
from
Sunderland,
in
1895,
and
moved
to
Sunderland
where
they
had
two
children,
Robert
Henry,
born
and
died
in
1896,
and
Harold,
born
1898.
In
the
1901
census,
Dorothy
Stevens
was
listed
as
a
visitor
but
I
think
it
was
Dorothy
Wilkinson,
Esthers
sister
as
the
year
and
place
of
birth
correspond.
Dorothy
is
listed
as
being
single
on
this
census,
as
is
Esthers
sister
Mary
Ann
who
was
listed
as
being
a
visitor in the 1911 census.
Dorothy
Wilkinson
was
born
in
1870
at
Ulgham.
I
can’t
find
any
record
of
her
getting
married
(see
above).
She
was
listed
as
a
housekeeper
th
Richard
Foster
at
the
Vicarage,
Scotland
Gate,
Choppington
in
the
1989
Census.
In
the
1911
census
she
is
still single and working as a sick nurse for the Blyth Nursing Association, living at 133 Bowes Street, Blyth
James
Wilkinson
was
born
in
1872
at
Ulgham.
I
can’t
find
any
record
of
him
getting
married
and
he
is
still
living
with
his
parents
in
the
1891
census,
a
coal
miner,
and
the
1901
census
at
Front
Row,
Bedlington
where
he
is
listed
as
a
deputy
overman. I can’t find any record of him in the 1911 census.
Mary
Ann
Wilkinson
was
born
at
Ulgham
in
1874.
Again,
I
can’t
find
any
record
of
her
getting
married.
In
the
1901
census
she
is
boarding
at
781
Burnley
Road,
Rawtenstall
in
Lancashire
and
her
occupation
is
listed
as
schoolmistress.
In
the
1911
census she was visiting sister Esther at Sunderland and is still single.
Elizabeth
Jane
Wilkinson
was
born
at
Ulgham
in
1877.
In
the
1891
census
she
was
a
servant,
alongside
sister
Dorothy,
to
Richard
Foster
at
the
Vicarage,
Scotland
Gate.
She
married
Walter
Lionel
Barrett,
a
Law
Clerk,
born
at
St
Georges,
Hanover
Square,
London
in
1876,
in
1905.
At
the
time
of
the
1911
census,
they
had
one
daughter
Harriett
Mary,
born
in
1908
at
Willesden,
Middlesex.
I
would
like
to
know
how
they
met,
possibly
Walter
visited
Richard
Foster,
but
we
will
probably
never
know.
Sarah
Wilkinson
was
born
at
Ulgham
in
1879.
She
married
William
Robert
Renwick,
a
butcher,
born
in
1865
at
Shotley,
Northumberland
and
they
had
one
son,
Wilkinson
Renwick.
Wilkinson
became
parish
priest
at
Alwinton
before
retiring
to
Matfen. Sarah died aged 71 in 1950.
Elizabeth Thornton 1870-1941 GreatGrandmother
I
have
very
little
information
and
no
photographs
of
Elizabeth.
She
was
born
in
Choppington
in
1870
(Morpeth
Vol
10b
Page
320)
daugter
of
James
Thornton
and
his
wife
Ann
(nee
Rutherford).
She
was
one
of
twelve
children
and
married
John
Wilkinson
in
1890.
In
a
tragic
coincidence
to
my
Grandmother
Sarah
Eleanor
Hall,
she
also
suffered
from
diabetes
which
caused
her
to
have
a
leg
amputated
due
to
gangrene.
So
my
Grandfather
John
Wilkinson
born
1897
saw
his
wife
and
mother
suffer the same fate.
Siblings
Frances
Thornton
was
born
in
1860
at
Bedlington.
She
married
James
Smith
in
1883
at
Stakeford
and
they
had
three
children, Jane born 1884 at Barrington, James born 1890 at Pegswood and Thomas born 1898 at Ashington.
Margery
Thornton
was
born
in
1864
at
Bedlington.
She
married
James
Hogg
in
1884
at
Stakeford
and
they
had
two
children, Waltere born 1885 at Morpeth and James Thornton born 1887 at Pegswood.
Jane
Ann
Thornton
was
born
in
1865
at
Bedlington.
She
married
John
Wandless
in
1888.
I
can’t
find
any
record
of
children.
John
Thornton
was
born
in
1866
at
Bedlington.
I
think
he
may
have
married
Margaret
Jane
Wilson
in
1907
but
can’t
be
100% sure.
Mary Thornton
was born in 1968 at Bedlington. I can’t find any more records of marriage or children.
James Thornton
was born in 1873 at Bedlington. Again, no records.
Thomas
Rutherford
Thornton
was
born
in
1875
at
Bedlington.
I
can’t
find
any
records
relating
to
marriage.
He
died
in
1940.
William Walter Thornton
was born in 1877 at Bedlington. I can’t find any records relating to marriage. He died in 1940.
Mark
Thornton
was
born
in
1879
at
Bedlington.
He
married
Elizabeth
Newton
in
1901
and
they
had
two
sons,
Joseph
Newton
Thornton
born
1902
and
John
Wandless
Thornton
born
1906.
Mark
was
a
labourer
underground.
He
died
in
1911
aged 32.
