John Wilkinson    Family Tree 
John Wilkinson 1897-1969  Paternal Grandfather John   Wilkinson   was   born   at   Choppington,   Northumberland   on   1   March   1897   to John   Wilkinson   (Born   1866)   and   his   wife   Elizabeth,   nee   Thornton.   He   was   one   of   ten children.   During   the   first   world   war   he   served   in   France   as   a   private   in   the   Durham Light   Infantry   and   received   the   British   War   Medal   and   the   Victory   Medal.   He   was   a stoneman   down   the   mine,   ususally   working   the   night   shift   He   worked   at   several small   mines   in   the   Ashington   area   before   settling   in   Shilbottle,   where   he   worked until   he   retired.   He   married   Sarah   Eleanor   Hall   on   13   September   1919   and   they   had five   children,   Esther   Hindhaugh   born   1920,   Isabel   born   1921,   my   father   John   born 1922,   Stella   born   1927   and   Elizabeth   (Betty)   born   1931.      They   lived   at   Colliers   Close, Shilbottle,   just   a   stones   throw   from   my   other   Grandparents.   They   had   a   small   back garden   and   there   was   always   a   good   showing   of   sweet   pea   flowers   in   the   summer months.   After   he   retired   he   moved   to   Percy   Road,   the   next   street   to   my   mothers house   where   he   would   spend   lots   of   time   in   his   larger   vegetable   garden.   He   visited daughter   Ettie   in   Canada   in   1968.   Following   a   stroke,   he   died   the   following   year   at Stellas house in Alnwick.
