Sir Henry Widdrington, my 11xGGrandfather, was born in 1561 at Swinburn, Northumberland and died on 4th
September 1623 at Swinburn Castle. He married Mary Curwen in 1585 at Widdrington. Mary was born in 1561 at
Workington in Cumbria and died on 12th August 1623. Sir Henry succeeded the estates of his father in 1592 and
was deputy Warden and Keeper of Ridsdale under Sir Robert Carey. He was Knighted at Widdrington on 9 April
1603 and was member of parliament for Northumberland from 1604 to 1622. He was High Sheriff of
Northumberland in 1606. They had eight children :-
Dorothy Widdrington, born about 1584. She married Sir Charles Howard of Croglin, Cumberland.
Katharine Widdrington, born about 1585. She married Sir William Riddell, born about 1580 at Gateshead,
County Durham.
Elizabeth Widdrington, born about 1585. She married Sir William Selby of Winlaton who was born in 1557
and died in 1649, buried on 3 April 1649. He received his Knighthood in 1603. I have only found two children,
William Selby and Sir George Selby. William was killed in 1636 in a duel with John Trollop of Thornley. The duel
took place at a horse race at Whitehall Dike Nook. Sir William was succeeded by his second son, Sir George who
died in 1688.

Ursula Widdrington, born about 1585, died 18 July 1644. No more information.
Mary Widdrington, born 1606 at Widdrington, Northumberland, died 22 July 1672 at London. She married Sir
Francis Howard of Corby. He was born on 29 August 1588 and died in 1660. Mary was
his second wife, having
previously married Margaret Preston. They had two children, Thomas who died in 1643 at Atherton Moor and
Elizabeth who married Edward Standish. Sir Francis and Mary had four sons, Francis, born 29 June 1635, Henry,
Thomas and William who died in 1708
Sir William Widdrington, born 11 July 1610, died 25 August 1651. He was Knighted in 1632 and was appointed
High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1636. He was elected Member of Parliament for Northumberland from 1640 to
1642 but was expelled in August 1642 for taking up arms in support of Charles the First. During the Civil War he
fought for the King mainly in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and was rewarded on 9 July 1642 by becoming the First
Baronet Widdrington of Widdrington. In 1644 after helping to defend York and the Kings defeat at Marston Moor
he left England with the Duke of Newcastle to take up exile in Hamburg. In 1648 he was condemned to death in his
absence by the House of Commons and his estates were confiscated. He returned in 1650 when he accompanied
Charles the Second to Scotland and in 1651 he was mortally wounded fighting for him at Wigan. In 1629, he
married Mary Thorold, born 1608 in Blankney Hall, Blankney, near Lincoln, Lincolnshire. They had eight sons and
two daughters

five sons and seven daughters.

Edward Widdrington, my 12xGGrandfather, was born about 1533 and died on 6 March 1577. He married
Ursula Carnaby, daughter of Sir Regnold Carnaby and his wife Dorothy Forster, on 23 June 1555. Ursula
was born about 1541 and died on 18 June 1600. Ursula married twice, the second marriage to Thomas
Musgrave, Captain of Bewcastle. This marriage took place in 1566 when Edward Widdrington was still living,
so I’m not sure if they were divorced or even if divorce was done in those days. Edward and Ursula had seven
children :-

Little Swinburn. He married Katherine Lawson, born about 1572 at Little Usworth, County Durham, died 1663.
I can only find one child, a son, Henry, who was born in 1604 at Little Swinburn and died in 1668 at Buteland,
Northumberland.

Roger Widdrington, born 1 June 1562, died 1636 in Cartington, Northumberland. He married Mary
Radcliffe who was born on 1 June 1582 and they had four children :- Mary, born about 1586, Margaret, born
1600,
died 1536 in Newcastle, Sir Edward, born about 1614, died 1651 and Clara who died in 1696.
Margaret married Nicholas Errington and Sir Edward married Christian Stuart and had five children
Sir Ralph Widdrington, born 1563. He married but I have not been able to find the name of his wife. They
had three children, Ursula, born about 1580, John, born about 1582, Katharine, born about 1584, died 1643

As stated above, Ursula Widdrington, nee Carnaby, married Thomas Musgrave in 1566. They had eleven
children, Simon, born 1567 at Penrith, died 1658, also at Penrith, Thomas, born 1571, died 1608, Catherine,
born 1580, died 1650, John, Nicholas, Isabel, Magdalen, Marye, Phillis, Richard and William.
Sir John Widdrington, my 13xGGrandfather, was born Abt 1503 at Widdrington, Northumberland, and
died on 10 October 1571. In 1522 he married Agnes Metcalf who was born Abt 1508 at Nappa, Yorkshire
and died in 1541. They had three children :-
Dorothy Widdrington was born Abt 1525 at Great Swinburn and died on 23rd September 1583 at
Flamborough, Yorkshire. She married Roger Fenwick of Wallington who died in 1550.
Sir Henry Widdrington was born in 1529 at Widdrington and died in 1592.
Edward Widdrington, born 1533 at Widdrington and died 6th March 1577. He was my 12xGGrandfather
and is covered above.
Following the death of Agnes in 1541, Sir John married another Agnes, Agnes Gower in 1542. Agnes was
born Abt 1525 at Stittenham, Yorkshire and died on 24th March 1583. She was the daughter of Edward
Gower, born 1506 at Woodhall, Worcestershire, and his wife, Margery Constable, born 1496 at Nuneaton
Warwickshire. Sir John and Agnes Gower had twelve children :-
Jane Widdrington, born 1543 at Widdrington, died 27 July 1590. She married John Carneby, born
about 1540 at Langley.
Margery Widdrington, born 1545. She married Henry Parkinson.
Martha Widdrington, born about 1546. She married Thomas Sandford.

He married Margery Percy, daughter of Sir Henry Percy, born 1449 and died 18 April 1489 at
Topcliffe, Yorkshire and his wife Maud Herbert, born 1448 at Ragland, Monmouthshire and died 1485
at Beverley, Yorkshire. Margaret was born in 1475 at Acton, Northumberland and died on 25
November 1540 at Skipton, Yorkshire. She and Sir Henry had seven children :-
Ralph Widdrington, born 1492, died 1568. He died without issue, DSP or Decessit sine prole in
genealogy parlance.
Constance Widdrington, born 1497 at Widdrington, died 1 March 1527. She married Valentine
Fenwick of Walker.
Mary Widdrington, born about 1500 at Widdrington. She married John Mitford of Seghill,
Northumberland and they had one son, John, born 1521, died 1571.

Margery Widdrington, born 1508 at Widdrington. She married Roberet Fenwick of Pitchfield.
Dorothy Widdrington, born 1512 at Widdrington. She married Robert Ogle, the fifth Baron of Ogle,
in 1526. They had three children, Robert Ogle, the sixth Baron of Ogle, Margery Ogle and Cuthbert
Ogle.

1502. He married Felicia Claxton, daughtern of Sir Robert Claxton of Dilston in about 1470.

Sir John Widdrington, my 18xGGrandfather, was born Abt 1346 at Widdrington and died in
1443, also at Widdrington. He was the second son and heir to his father, Roger Widdrington, by his
second wife Agnes (surname not known) and was Knighted before April 1402. Keen on public life he
held several diverse positions, being elected to represent Northumberland as their Member of
Parliament in January 1404 and again in November 1414. He was a JP of Northumberland several
times between 1405 and 1439 and was Sheriff of Northumberland for three short spells between
1410 and 1430. From the 30 November 1407 he was Escheater for Northumberland for a period of
two years, with responsibility to ensure that any property or estates that were left intestate were
handed over to the government. He married Catherine Acton, daughter of Sir William Acton, born
1347, in 1400. Catherine was born in 1377 and died in 1443 at Widdrington. They had four children :-

Sir Roger Widdrington, my 19xGGrandfather, was born in 1316 at Colwell, Northumberland
and died in 1372 at Haughton Castle, Northumberland. He married Elizabeth Acton on 23
September 1334. Elizabeth was born in 1316 at Newcastle Upon Tyne and died in 1368 at
Widdrington. Sir Roger was the first Widdrington to achieve a prominent position among the
Northumbrian gentry, partly because of his marriage to Elizabeth, the only child of the wealthy
Newcastle-upon-Tyne merchant, Richard Acton, which brought him considerable amounts of
land and money. They had four children :-
